A Wise Man Once Said …

Blog post image

Maybe you have heard of Hippocrates? He was a Greek physician from long ago. He lived from 460-370BC and is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine. In fact, he is known as ‘The Father of Western Medicine.”

Among the many philosophical and intuitive things he shared was that statement above:

“Look well to the spine for the cause of Disease”.

We all know the critical nature of the spine and the importance of keeping it healthy, free from damage and minimizing wear and tear on it. It is pretty well accepted that “IF” a person is to function at 100% of their potential, they indeed need a spine that is functioning at 100%. Nobody really argues that. So, since we discuss weight concerns and weight control in these blog pieces, let’s think about this statement by Hippocrates.

Common sense tells us (and numerous clinical studies demonstrate) that added weight and obesity create more wear and tear on the spine. By the way, it’s not just the physical stress associated with a person’s body hauling more pounds around all dat every day. There are also postural effects related. Think about how a person may stand or sit who is heavier than they should be.

In addition, there are clear biomechanical alterations which result. Think about how a person moves when bigger than they ideally should be. Or, consider the lack of movement that may ensue. This creates more wear and tear and critical joints in THE most critical area of our body. (Side note: refer back to last week’s piece which touched on osteoarthritis). Lastly, it’s worth noting that internal chemical toxicity is associated with obesity. Toxicity can absolutely affect joint and spinal health.

What’s the point here?

If you are hoping, praying, wishing or wanting a better level of health … or if you are attempting to address, care for or prevent DISEASE then we are going to challenge you address something (your weight) which radically effects THE very part of your body that The Father of Medicine tells us is KEY!

You see, the more we write and share with you about this obesity and excess fat thing, the more it should be moving in your mind beyond simply a number on the scale, a pant size, how we feel we “look”, etc. It’s all bigger than that. Your weight affects your spine. But, don’t take it from us. Listen to the wisdom of the ages and “Look well to the spine for the cause of disease”.

Then … if that makes sense, consider your spine. Do it a favor. Take a load off it. It will thank you!

Click. Call. Or just come in when you’re ready to do that!
